Flames of War Rules Review

 

Flames of War is a WW2 Battalion level game produced by Battlefront Miniatures.  Battlefront does set a high standard for their miniatures and product but does the game live up to the flashy product?  Never the less our Hunt the Tiger games are always the best.

My Reviews are going to be graded like classes in College; A,B,C,D,E.  At the end we will get a GPA which will determine if this game makes distinguished honor roll, honor roll, passes or fails.  A good game should at least pass with a C average.

The categories I will be grading are 1) Presentation/Product/Package, 2) Game Rules/Mechanics,             3) Historical/fantasy Cannon Accuracy, 4) Cost/time, 5) Good Time and Memories

1) Presentation/Product/Package.  Flames of War starter boxes... End of Review.  Easiest Historical miniatures game to get into!  Everything is in the box including rule books, QRS, dice, markers miniatures.  The best part are the unit cards.  High quality game piece.

2) Game Rules/Mechanics.  Ummmm.  Its you go/I go so not inventive.  Easy for new players to learn.  The game mechanics work (but when we get to history...). Nothing crazy inventive.  Again they work.  you can play the game off of the Unit cards almost exclusively which is nice.  And is a saving grace here.

3) Historical Accuracy.  Or inaccuracy?  The game and product are designed to lean heavily on ornament play and not actual historical play.  Though the unit cards do a good job of simulating its a bad idea for a Stuart to go up against a Panzer IV but other than that.  Historical tactics and devices matter not.

4) Cost/Time. If you are building a tournament army for Flames of War this is actually one of the cheapest options you have in Historical Miniatures.  Much Cheaper than Bolt Action or Warhammer or Middle Earth.  And the Games are easy to resolve in under 2 hours.  If you want to recreate Utah Beach.  Try something else.

A

5) Good times/memories.  Watching Aidan leave the room when he rolled a 1 on an armor save for a Tiger Tank and loose the game was magical enough.  You will have great moments like this while playing this game.

GPA is 3.00

Not a bad game especially for beginners.  But it is for beginners.  If you want better find other games.
