"Magic the Gathering" Game Review

Magic the Gathering from wizards of the coast is one of the oldest TCGs.  For decades this game has been played and loved by many.  Let's see how it stacks up!

My Reviews are going to be graded like classes in College; A,B,C,D,E.  At the end we will get a GPA which will determine if this game makes distinguished honor roll, honor roll, passes or fails.  A good game should at least pass with a C average.

The categories I will be grading are 1) Presentation/Product/Package, 2) Game Rules/Mechanics, 3) Historical/fantasy Cannon Accuracy, 4) Cost/time, 5) Good Time and Memories

1) Presentation/Product.  Magic the Gathering is a collectable Card Game.  So the Product is easily available and of good quality.  And every few months Wizards of the Coast release a new expansion for the game keeping it fresh.  Personally the Lord of the Rings expansion was my favorite.  Their ability to blend pop fantasy culture into a popular card game is second to none.

A

2) Game Rules/Mechanics.  To be honest, I play commander decks and not the traditional 60 card decks.  But that is the fun with these rules there are different versions to play with the same cards.  That is a huge plus in my book.  The mechanics are not complicated and very simple.  Use your land cards as many to play your other cards and try to attack the other players and knock them out.  With the commander decks there is some politics that go with that too that make the game more intriguing.  Though the game has not changed much and there are some broken card mechanics that can be easily exploited it is a solid game.

B

3) Fantasy Canon.  One of the best parts of MTG is that it stays true to the fantasy canons of the genres it includes.  For example, The Lord of the Rings cards included lore from the books that was not in the Peter Jackson movies.  A big Win in my book.  You can only get so much actual lore though.  Because the mechanics did not change the One Ring Card is cool but not all powerful.  Just using the LOTR as an example.

B+

4) Cost/time.  Well this is where the good times stop.  Some people will spend $100s on one commander deck to make it perfect.  Myself, I choose the old fashion way.  Buy a pack of cards and build a deck from the unknown. However, that takes time too.  This game can become more expensive than a table top game.

C-

5). Good times.  Every game played is worth it.  The latest one we played I went from 1 health in last place to winning the game with 32 health.  Life Link is a great card to have.  You never know what will happen!

A

The final grade is a 3.20.  The cost is worth it.
