To the Strongest Rule Review

To the Strongest is a set of rules to play ancients and medieval era battles.  Let's see if this grid based game can hold up to the standards.

My Reviews are going to be graded like classes in College; A,B,C,D,E.  At the end we will get a GPA which will determine if this game makes distinguished honor roll, honor roll, passes or fails.  A good game should at least pass with a C average.

The categories I will be grading are 1) Presentation/Product/Package, 2) Game Rules/Mechanics, 3) Historical/fantasy Cannon Accuracy, 4) Cost/time, 5) Good Time and Memories

1) Product.  To the Strongest is a rule set with tons of supplements and scenario books available from the time of Greece and Rome with books even for the English Civil War (Separate Rule review for that coming in the future).  Lots of support and lots of players.  Just no miniatures.  Not bad.

B+

2) Game Rules.  To the Strongest is s grid based system which is flexible enough to use card or d10 activation.  That built in flexibility makes it a strong ruleset to be played by new players if they have cards or d10 dice.  The rules are simple enough with modifiers limited again making it great for new players.  Nothing to innovative but these rules do work!

A-

3) Historical accuracy.  Simple rulesets generally lack crunchiness.  To the Strongest does a good job of keeping great historical flavor with unit design.  Every unit in the rule set has its own rules on how it is used in combat which makes you feel like that is a roman infantry unit with its Pela and that is real Spanish infantry.

A-

4) Cost/time.  One of the great things about to the strongest is that you do not need many bases to play a game.  It is one of the cheapest games to put on the table from the marketplace and the game resolves itself in around 2 hours which is what you want in an evening game.  Not terrain heavy either which lessens the price and prep time.

A

5) Good Times.  I prefer the D10 mechanics which make for very comical activation or frustrating depending on your disposition

B+

And the final verdict is....3.60

This made the honor roll of games!  Worth the price!!!
