Lion Rampant Rule Review
Lion Rampant is a medieval table top game published by Osprey Publishing. This is a review of the 2nd edition
My Reviews are going to be graded like classes in College; A,B,C,D,E. At the end we will get a GPA which will determine if this game makes distinguished honor roll, honor roll, passes or fails. A good game should at least pass with a C average.
The categories I will be grading are 1) Presentation/Product/Package, 2) Game Rules/Mechanics, 3) Historical/fantasy Cannon Accuracy, 4) Cost/time, 5) Good Time and Memories
1) Presentation/product/package. The 2nd edition book is a gorgeous that is easy to read and find the rules you need to find. The photos are great. If this was just a review of only the book this would be an easy A but the package is miniatures, terrain and all that comes with the product. Lion Rampant does not sell miniatures or supplements for scenarios. That is up to you. Plus you need to produce your own unit rosters which can take time.
B-
2) Game Rules/Mechanics. Lion Rampant is a D6 based game. You roll 12 dice if you are at full health, 6 if you are at half health. A few modifiers tell you what you need to roll. But the best part of the game is leaders issuing challenges on the battle field to the enemy. It makes leaders legendary and tries to recreate moments when Kings did matter in hand to hand combat. If you like lots of details not the ruleset for you but if you like easy to learn. It's a great rule set.
A-
3) Historical Accuracy. This is the lightest part of Lion Rampant. If you want to play a medieval skirmish game great. However if you wish to play Agincourt well you will have to make modifications to upscale. Little Wars TV would call this a beer and pretzel game meaning there is some historical flavor but not a lot.
C+
4) Cost/time. It is an easy game to put on the table. You don't need hordes of models to play so it is one of the cheaper games to play. also the game is easy to play in one evening and have a satisfying conclusion.
A+
5) Good times. So far this game has produced good and great games for our group. It has worked so well we are trying Dragon Rampant, its fantasy twin game.
A-
And the final result is..... Drumroll please
3.18!
A game worth trying!
